Abertay is proud to support Scottish Housing Day – 18 September 2024

‘Homes for Life’

Abertay aims to enhance the quality of life in our communities.

Our purpose is to provide social housing to people in housing need. We have around 1,850 houses in Dundee and surrounding areas, including around 238 retirement housing properties which are situated at six complexes across Dundee.

With six retirement complexes and a high percentage of elderly tenants in the rest of our homes, the Association has an important role to play in helping our tenants to remain in their own homes and to sustain their tenancies.

The current adaptations we carry out can range from simple adjustments, such as installing handrails and grab bars, to more extensive modifications, including widening doorways and reducing trip hazards. By implementing these changes, the Association can ensure our tenants can continue to live comfortably and independently as they age.

Here at the Association, we believe one of the key aspects of creating homes for life is to promote accessibility and safety within the home environment. This means addressing issues such as uneven flooring, poor lighting, and inadequate bathroom facilities. Additionally, ensuring that bathrooms are equipped with walk-in showers or baths with low thresholds can significantly enhance the safety and convenience of our elderly tenants.

Equally as important as the physical adaptations, we also place a high emphasis on the social and communal aspects of housing in particular in our Retirement Housing Complexes, encouraging a sense of community and providing opportunities for social interaction among tenants and the wider community. This has a positive impact on mental well-being, reducing feelings of isolation and loneliness.

It is essential for the Association to collaborate with local authorities, healthcare providers, and community organisations to ensure that the needs of our ageing tenants are adequately addressed. By working together, we can develop holistic approaches to creating homes for life, taking into account not only the physical aspects of housing but also the social, emotional, and technological needs of our older tenants.
